Creation Myths

A space for art, musings and adventures in a big city.

I just realized I haven’t posted one of my art pieces that I am most proud of.

I made this piece a few months ago, after feeling very let down and quite disgusted with San Francisco. Ever since I was small I had wanted to move to SF, so it was an odd place to be in my life when all I could see when I stepped outside was garbage and filth. I think this came to the forefront of my attention given how much time I have to spend downtown. Market Street is such a surreal place where some of the scummiest things meet the most divine.

For this piece I used acrylic paints on a canvas made from crushed cardboard boxes with news papers laid over. I smeared olive oil around the buildings to represent the fog that the city is so famous for. This also added to the effect I was going for of making the piece look dirty. It felt appropriate to literally paint on garbage.

Note: If you look at one of the close up shots, some North Korean official is standing on the Embarcadero. Didn’t plan for that, merely happenstance.
